You know that beginning scene in the Layer Cake film, where they take off in the 2003 Audi RS 6 Avant to the sound of twin-turbo V8 exhaust and with The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary as the soundtrack? No? Well, you've missed out, so here it is;
Short though that scene is, the Audi RS 6 Avant is absolutely the star, and no doubt left many who watched it wanting one.
What are the choices for rapid German estate cars of 2025 though? Well thankfully, fast estates are still a thing!
If we're going to reference a film featuring one, let's start the list with the modern version of Audi's hot estate; the 2025 RS6 Avant Performance. The average person won't know that this family-friendly, load-lugging car has supercar power and acceleration, because its styling is fairly quiet and subdued.

However, what lies beneath the bonnet is a 4.0 litre, twin-turbo V8 engine pushing out 621 horsepower and 626 ft lb (850Nm) of torque through all four tyres, equating to a 0 - 62 mph (0 - 100 kph) time of just 3.4 seconds, and a top speed of 174 mph. If you can afford the £112,650 price tag (April 2025), no doubt you'll be happy with the above stats.

The M5 was already a very cool car, but an estate version sees car-lovers goes all wobbly. The 2025 BMW M5 Touring is not just quick, but it's going to embarrass supercar owners, such is the speed and power it's putting out.

BMW have mated a plug-in hybrid system to their 4.4 litre V8, for a total output of 727 horsepower (535KW) and 1,000 Nm (737 ft lb) of torque, driven through all four wheels and providing a 0 - 62 mph time of 3.6 seconds and 151 mph at the top end (no doubt electronically limited). That 0 - 62 time may be similar to the RS 6, but I'm thinking the M5 Touring's rolling acceleration will be superior, thanks to all that extra torque from the hybrid system. The price? £113,405 (as of April 2025).

Mercedes-Benz AMG have been building fast wagons since 1990, so they've got quite the history here. Gone are the days of big 5.5 litre V8s though (shame really, as they sounded so beautiful), with the thoroughly-modern Mercedes-AMG E 53 HYBRID 4MATIC+ (to give it its full name) now being powered by a plug-in hybrid alongside a turbocharged 3.0 litre straight-six engine.

Output is 585 bhp (612 bhp with the Race Start function) and 750 Nm (553 ft lb) of torque, driving through all wheels, and propelling the car to sixty-two miles per hour in 3.8 seconds, and on to a limited 155 mph. Like BMW, that plug-in hybrid system means that it'll also do up to 62 whisper-quiet miles with zero emissions, and up the fuel economy in a big way. A perfect combo. The price starts at £97,995 (as of April 2025).
